40 Day Prayer Focuses for Churches & Ministries: Targeting Spiritual Warfare

Prayer and PraiseThe Question:

Is your church body or ministry being faced with an abnormal amount of spiritual warfare and attack?

If so, then it is possible that the Enemy has established a stronghold or a series of strongholds that can be dealt with through a 40 Day prayer focus.

Is your church body or ministry living in the victory of these promises?

Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; He answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. – Psalm 20:6-8

There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you and on the clouds in His majesty.  The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.  He will drive out your enemy before you, saying, “Destroy him!” – Deuteronomy 33:26-27

“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him.  “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”  Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!”  — 2 Kings 6:16-17

The Need:

The following questions are for your leadership team to consider as you pray and discern.

1. What strongholds has the Enemy possibly been able to fortify a position of attack against our church or ministry?

2. Have there been any ongoing, undealt-with sins amongst our leadership?

There’s no formula to determine these, they must be revealed to you by the Spirit of the Living God.

For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. – Mark 4:22

3. Is there a spiritual heaviness that’s very noticeable on our church or ministry campus?

4. Have we noticed a pattern of repeated satanic attack during a similar time or against a specific ministry area?

5. In last decade or so of our church or ministry history, can we identify undealt-with sins that have created a figurative pile of dysfunction, disorder, disclosed and hidden things, death, and decay that have been “swept under the rug,” glossed over, and ignored. Has God been trying to get our attention concerning it so that He can bring healing, wholeness and redemption?

He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. – Proverbs 28:13

6. Are we consistently grieving the Holy Spirit by our unwillingness to allow Him to move in biblical but also supernatural ways within our body?

Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

7. As leadership do we have hearts of stone that Jesus needs to turn into hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26)? As leadership are we in the consistent practice of listening to God?

The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.

He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.

The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears,
and I have not been rebellious;
I have not drawn back. – Isaiah 50:4-5

8. Is our church or ministry in a “life or death” spiritual battle that needs a 2 Chronicles 20:12-17 victory?

9. Are we on the brink of Father using our church body in mighty way?

What promises has Father spoken over our church body? What has He impressed upon our hearts as to what He is about to do in our midst?

For thus says the Lord: “Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken, and the prey of the tyrant be rescued, for I will contend with those who contend with you, and I will save your children.” – Isaiah 49:25

The Bottom Line:

Jesus wants to use your church body or ministry mightily for the saving of many lives (Genesis 50:20), but first requires that we rid ourselves of any existing piles of death and curses (Deuteronomy 30:19-20) so we can stand against the enemies coming against us (Joshua 7:13, Ephesians 6:12-13).  Dealing with the spiritual strongholds or getting rid of your pile will follow clearly-stated biblical principles. At the same time, your church’s or your ministry’s 40 Day Prayer Focus will be tailor-fit by Jesus’ guidance and direction.

Red Moon Rising: 24-7 Prayer Movement [book review]

red moonWhat feelings are evoked in you when you see a red moon?

Awe, fear, wonder, anxiety?

Joel 2:28-32 talks of a red moon in the last days:

I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

God is carrying out His plans and purposes spoken of in Joel in our day.

Many of us were unaware that in September of 1999, IHOP (International House of Prayer) in Kansas City as well as groups of believers throughout Europe began to establish 24-7 rooms of prayer. Today there are over 100 groups in over 60 countries who are praying 24-7.

Ponder that fact for a moment, since 1999 believers worldwide have been engaging in 24-7 prayer . . . that’s the equivalent of:

  • 13 years
  • 4,745 days
  • 113,880 hours
  • 6,832,800 minutes

God is doing countless miraculous works of healing, rescuing, redeeming, restoring, and raising up of men and women to live out their callings and to walk in the power, strength, and might He has given us to be His ambassadors in these last days.

If you’re like me, you’ve heard the rumblings, you’ve caught snippets of the story, but you’re on the periphery of the 24-7 prayer movement, I encourage you to do two things.

1. Check out the below links:

2. Read Red Moon Rising: How 24-7 Prayer Is Awakening a Generation by Pete Greig and Dave Roberts.

In an interview, Pete shares how it all started:

We were inspired by the 18th century Moravians who prayed non-stop for 100 years in shifts and in the process rewrote history, converting John Wesley along the way. I knew that God was calling his church to pray and that ‘we were bad at it’. After a chance visit to Hernnhut, the German village in which the 100-year prayer meeting, I figured that if the Moravians could do a century of 24/7 prayer, we could at least try for a month in our church back home. – Christianbookpreviews interview

In Red Moon Rising, you will journey alongside Pete, his wife Samie, Dave and others as God plunges them into the adventure of living in abandon to obeying Him regardless of how risky or crazy it seems to us at them time. As a result of theirs and others obedience captives are being taken from warriors and plunder retrieved from the fierce and God’s dearly Beloved children (Is 49:25) are being saved.

For more, read The 24-7 Prayer Manual: Anyone, Anywhere Can Learn to Pray Like Never Before by Pete Greig.

No matter where you live, in some way you can join in the 24-7 prayer movement. How is God asking you to partake?

Angela’s First Book: A Signal and a Signing [Guest Post]

When she first asked me to write the introduction to her book, I thought it odd. While I have a great deal of respect and love for both the author and the subject matter, there are many who have known Angela longer and seen her service to God in many areas for many years. Wouldn’t they be better candidates?

If I’ve learned anything at all about how Angela lives and gives of her life, one thing stands out: her surrender to the voice of God.

I’ve met with, worked alongside with, and even battled with some consecrated Christians in my life – though I cannot imagine any as Christ-like 24/7 as Angela. Her cup is constantly overflowing with contagious joy!

As we began forging our work and lives together, I recognized the call on Angela’s life – and her commission to write Precious Stones – has been one of consistency and compassion. Not to impress or celebrate herself. She has an audience of One.

As she prepares for her first book signing at Wellspring Christian Resources in the Des Moines area this Saturday (July 7th), we prepare a place in prayer for this book to find its way into the hearts and hands of prayer warriors, church groups, and mission fields across the globe.

I’m grateful to God for such a extravagantly loving friend, partner, and wife. My name is Mike Sansone.

What’s a Prophetic Intercessor?

Angela Intercedes

It’s the kind of question people don’t ask – they’re afraid the answer could open a can of worms. But it’s on their minds: What is a prophetic intercessor?

A great book definition of it:

Prophetic Intercessor – seems to hear from God almost as much as they speak to God.  Exhortation, faith, wisdom, words of knowledge and discernment flow from the prophetic intercessor.

With those who are “eyes” and “ears” (prophetic intercessors), God often shares the secrets of His heart and the strategies of His work.  God reveals His plans to them.  At times He reveals the plans of the enemy, as well. (Jeremiah 33:3, 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21) – Beyond the Veil by Alice Smith

Your burning question may still be, “But what does a prophetic intercessor do beyond pray lots?”

Father has a job description to fit His unique and specific calling on the life of a prophetic intercessor. Yet there are also similarities amongst the differences. Below is what living out Father’s calling on my life looks like:

Ministry Leaders and Friends

Connect with and Encourage Ministry Leaders

Over the years, Father has had me encourage and connect with ministry leaders all over the world. Some connections become a long-term partnering, some are for just a season of ministry, and some are for the length of a phone or email conversation.Through these relationships and connections, Father has me live out the heart of Hebrews 10:24 to His Beloved shepherds and leaders.

And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Onsite Intercession

Teach and Train

I teach about intercessory prayer and spiritual warfare at churches or small group gatherings.

I train short-term mission teams through a training called Luke 10 Training to prepare the teams to effectively intercede for the people and the country they are traveling to as well as how to knowledgeably battle the spiritual warfare they will face there.

Sometimes, I lead mission teams in intercessory prayer on-site on the mission trip.

ministry leaders of today and tomorrow

Come Alongside Churches, Ministries, and Individuals

. . . in dealing with long-term, ongoing, and debilitating spiritual warfare in their church body, ministry, or in their personal lives.

I have given you authority . . . to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Long-term, ongoing, and debilitating spiritual warfare is an opportunity to join Father in believing His promise to us in Psalm 20:6-8 and countless other verses.

Precious Stones of IntercessionNow I know that the Lord saves his anointed; He answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.

I detail more stories of churches, ministries, and individuals experiencing freedom from bondage and from long-term, ongoing, and debilitating spiritual warfare in my book Precious Stones of Intercession: Specific and Persistent Prayer on Behalf of Others.

Speak and Write

Angela Speaking

Our churches, ministries, families, and world are in desperate need for us as believers to daily walk in the power and authority we have been given and to actively and boldly fight against the spiritual warfare that attacks us on all fronts.

My mission in speaking and writing is to help build up the body with practical strategies to make the above a functional reality in their church, ministry, and family life.

Even I Have Asked the Question

As a prophetic intercessor, I have the honor and the privilege to intercede, and to strengthen, encourage and comfort the body of Christ through Father’s words (1 Cor 14:3).

It is a calling I never thought of having. It’s a calling I and others have questioned. It’s a calling that invites both the curiosity and critique of others. It is a calling I wouldn’t have chosen for myself.

And yet, in submitting to Father’s plan and living for an audience of One, I increasingly find that there is no greater honor and no greater privilege than to be who He has called you to be and to do what He has called you to do (Eph 2:10).

Is Your Prayer Effectual?

Tearful PrayerBoundless and countless are the circumstances and situations in our lives in which Father waits on “the edge of His seat” for us to pray with unwavering and longsuffering faith and to not be afraid; just believe (Mark 5:36).

Longsuffering can be defined as long and patient endurance of injury, trouble, or provocation.

The King James translation uses the word “travail” in speaking of a woman in childbirth.  Travail means pain, anguish or suffering as a result of mental or physical hardship”.

We think nothing of a woman “travailing” in childbirth; and yet how often are we willing to travail in prayer — to persevere, to endure, to continue calling out to our God who hears, and to embrace the belief that He is the God who gives life to the dead?

James 5:16 (KJV), “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

To be effectual, one is producing or capable of producing an intended effect to be adequate. To be fervent, a person has or shows great warmth or intensity of spirit, feeling, or enthusiasm.

Can any of these words be used to describe our prayers:

  • Effectual
  • Fervent
  • Faith-filled
  • Longsuffering
  • Travailing
  • Unwavering

Travailing prayer equals prevailing prayer.

When Father Speaks

When Father speaks to our hearts, it is much like a mountain climb.  For there is a change that will take place in our heart, circumstances, situation, and our very lives if we let Father’s words change us from within and then let them guide our actions.

When hikers return from a mountain climb, they want to share about the view, their adventure, and the reflections they had about what they experienced and saw.

I am one of Father’s prophetic intercessors (1 Cor 14:3) and I’ve delivered messages from Father to many different people locally, nationally and globally.  All of the messages are coming through my human vessel so they must be tested (1 Thess 5:19-21), weighed (1 Cor 14:29) and the end result seen (Jer 32:6-8).

As a prophetic intercessor, I will spend thousands of hours of my life interceding for churches that need cleansing, marriages that need strengthening, and ministries that need the wind of the Holy Spirit’s fresh empowering.  In the hundreds of hours that I’ve already spent interceding, one focus verse that I’ve prayed countless times and challenged many to daily pray is Isaiah 50:4-5.

The Sovereign LORD has given me an instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.
The Sovereign LORD has opened my ears,
and I have not been rebellious;
I have not drawn back.

What follows in this series, When Father Speaks, are phrases that Father has repeated many times in several different instances, during various intercession assignments He’s given me to complete over the past 17 years.  These assignments have lasted anywhere from weeks, to months, to years.  I pray this series is both an encouragement and a challenge to you.

Below is a helpful tool I share with others concerning testing prophetic words. If you’re interested in reading further on hearing Father’s voice, Surprised by the Voice of God by Jack Deere is an excellent resource.  For more on discerning Father’s voice, read Discord: Voices of Confusion from my 5 Pitfalls While Waiting on His Promises series.

Receiving and Testing a Word of Prophecy

1)  Receive seed (truth or prophecy — 1 Cor 14:3) with a humble heart and an open spirit

2) Weigh, test seed (1 Thess 5:19-21, 1 Cor 14:29-33)

3a) Father confirms seed to spirit and heart; plant in heart

3b) Father does not confirm seed; set seed aside (see 5b below)

4) Get counsel from others on words of prophecy shared (Prov 11:14, 15:22)

5a) If truly of Father, He will cause planted seed to grow your heart and to resonate in your spirit, further confirming that the truth or prophecy is from Him

If 3b; 5b) if Father doesn’t go back to those seeds and confirm them in a different way or at a different time, then eventually He will tell you that you can discard that seed (truth or prophecy) as refuse.
