We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. – C.S. Lewis (quoted by John Piper)
Think back to birthdays, Christmases, and the special occasions of your life and answer this:
Have you ever left a present unopened?
Have you ever said, “No thanks, I’ll pass.”
Or replied, “I’m happy with what I have; I don’t need any more.”
Most of us would respond, “That’s ridiculous! I’ll open the present!”
Yet, when it comes to Father offering us His gifts . . .
Why do we so often resist?
Why do we get wary and cautious?
Why do we become securely wise in our own logic and understanding?
Have you ever stood amongst tall trees and realized how small you truly were?
Father’s gifts are often:
- Seemingly unlikely
- Extrodinarily unrealistic
- Randomly untimely
- Massively inconvenient
- Crazy leaps of faith
- Highly illogical
- Unexpected blessings
- Unimaginable opportunities
Sadly, many of us miss out because we can’t get past the above descriptors; so we leave the gifts He’s offered to us “safely” unopened.
We forget the truth of Isaiah 55:8-9:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Are you leaving His gifts to you unopened?
